After your surgery, you will likely feel very sleepy. The sedatives can take some time before they fully wear off. In the meantime, you may feel tired and confused for many hours. It’s important that someone can help you home and help you settle so that you can rest and sleep until the medication has worn off.

It is also important that your rest continues after the sedatives have worn off. You will need the extra energy for your body to repair itself. Don’t be tempted to rush back to school or work, it will only make your recovery longer.


It is best to stick to soft, cold foods while your mouth heals. Some good choices of food include yogurt, applesauce or oatmeal. Smoothies are also good but don’t use a straw if you had an extraction. The sucking action could dislodge a clot, leading to dry socket, a post-surgical complication that is very painful.

Cleaning your teeth

For at least the first 24 hours it is generally best not to brush or floss your teeth after oral surgery. The following day, you may rinse your mouth with a saltwater solution up to four times a day. It will also be possible to lightly brush and floss areas of your teeth away from the extraction site. You can resume gentle brushing to the extraction site once you begin to heal.

Managing pain

This may be one of your greatest concerns. Your surgeon will provide you with a prescription for some pain medication that will help you through the first few days. If your pain persists then you may try using an ice pack or over the counter anti-inflammatories. You can always speak to your surgeon if the pain is something that you are concerned about. They will be able to provide you with customized advice so that you can recover comfortably. 

Things to avoid

Drinking alcohol and smoking are things that you should avoid both before and after surgery. They can affect your body’s ability to heal, making your recovery period longer and possibly even cause problems.

Crunchy food should also be avoided. Foods like carrots and popcorn could harm the recovery process. Not only are they hard to chew but little pieces could get stuck in your surgical site or become lodged in an empty tooth socket.

Strenuous exercise should also be avoided for at least three days after your operation. During exercise blood flow is increased and this could increase the chance of a blood clot being dislodged.
