WHAT ARE DENTAL IMPLANTS?

Dental implants are replacement artificial tooth roots that fuse directly with your jawbone.

Because the small titanium implant fixture is secured into your jawbone, it acts as a sturdy base for a few replacement teeth prosthetics, such as crowns and even dentures.

They are used to replace missing teeth and go directly into the empty socket left from your tooth loss.

WHAT ARE ALL-ON-4 DENTAL IMPLANTS?

All-on-4 dental implants, or hybrid dentures, is a full arch of artificial teeth that can be secured to your jaw with just four implanted posts.

They are recommended for when you need to replace multiple teeth, such as when replacing your full set of teeth

Our surgeons can usually place your All-on-4 dental implants in a single day. This is far quicker than the time-consuming process of replacing all your teeth with individual dental implants.

CAN ANYONE GET DENTAL IMPLANTS?

You are likely a good candidate for the dental implants procedure if your dentist would also accept you for a routine tooth extraction or any other oral surgery.

You will also need to have healthy gums and sufficient bone density to support the implant. After dental implant surgery, you should be committed to maintaining good oral hygiene and schedule regular dental visits.

If you’re a smoker or suffer from uncontrolled chronic disorders, such as diabetes or heart disease, or have had radiation therapy to the head/neck area, then you will need to be evaluated on an individual basis.

WHAT IS THE PROCESS FOR GETTING DENTAL IMPLANTS?

If you’re planning on getting dental implants, you’ll need a few appointments at Novato Oral Surgery.

At your first visit, your oral surgeon will take scans and X-rays of your mouth. It’s important to make sure you have enough jawbone strength and density to support the implant.

Luckily, even if your bone isn’t strong enough, the Novato Oral Surgery team can perform a bone graft procedure to help strengthen your jawbone.

The surgeon will often perform a bone graft when the replacement tooth is to be placed at the back of the upper jaw (maxilla).

The maxillary sinus (air-filled space found in the bones of the face) is found there and there is usually insufficient bone for a dental implant.

However, a small surgical procedure called a sinus lift raises the sinus floor, and then bone can be grafted into the sinus.

Your dental specialist may also use small-diameter implants, or mini implants, if the bone structure is insufficient to support a dental implant.

At your next visit, your provider implants the titanium rod into your jawbone and stitches your gums up around it. The process isn’t painful as you’ll be under local anesthetic, and sedation is offered if you choose.

It takes three to six months for your new implant to fully fuse to your jawbone.

When your implant is fully secured, you’ll return to the office so your surgeon can attach the abutment and prepare your jaw for your dental crown or dentures.

FOLLOW-UP AND AFTERCARE

Once your dental implant has been installed, you will need to protect the gum tissue and bone surrounding the implant from peri-implantitis

This condition refers to inflammation around the implant. This is similar to periodontal disease, which affects natural teeth.

Inflammation occurs either through excessive biting forces on the implant or through bacterial infection. If left untreated, you could lose your dental implant to peri-implantitis.

At home, you will need to regularly brush your teeth and floss. This will remove food particles and plaque, keeping your implant clean.

At the dental office, the soft and hard tissues around the implant site will be examined and harder calcified deposits will be removed.

They may also adjust the bite alignment if the implant needs protecting from heavy biting forces.

WHY SHOULD I CHOOSE DENTAL IMPLANTS?

Most dental specialists would recommend dental implant treatment over other tooth-replacement procedures.

The oral surgeons at Novato Oral Surgery in Novato, CA, give several reasons why you should choose dental implants.

They include:

Improved Appearance

Most people won’t be able to tell that your teeth are false. That’s because dental implants are made to look like natural teeth.

The implant screw forms a permanent bond with your bone structure so it won’t slip out of place. This is important for the structure of your face, preventing a sunken look that can appear with missing teeth.

Improved Speech

Dental implants allow for greater control over your speech than a removable denture will. Your dental implant, therefore, will not be a cause for mumbling or slurring of words.

Improved Comfort

Removable dentures can be very distracting when they slip around in the mouth. Dental implants won’t move, resulting in greater comfort.

Confidence Eating

Your dental implants will be as strong as your natural teeth.  This means you can eat crispy or crunchy foods with confidence.

Improved Self-Esteem

Being ashamed to smile is a common problem when you don’t feel that your teeth are attractive. You don’t need to worry about that with dental implants, as they have the appearance of real teeth.

Improved Oral Health

Compared to fitting a tooth-supported bridge, a dental implant offers long-term benefits to your oral health. That’s because sometimes you may need to have other teeth reduced when fitting a bridge.

On the other hand, a dental implant will be made to fit perfectly between your adjacent teeth. There will even be enough space for you to floss, improving oral hygiene.

Durability

Most dental implants will continue functioning for a lifetime. The materials are hard-wearing and won’t fail over time.

Convenience

There are a lot of things you need to be careful about with removable dentures. There’s the messy adhesives, cleaning schedules, etc.

To care for dental implants, though, is simple. They don’t need to be removed or stuck in place again. Instead, you can care for them just like your natural teeth.

Prevents Bone Loss

Those with missing teeth often have weaker jawbones. This is because the surrounding bone has a lack of stimulation. Dental implants integrate directly into the jaw, stimulating bone growth.

FAQ

WHAT ARE DENTAL IMPLANTS MADE OF?

Dental implants are essentially made up of three components.

A titanium post is used to provide the foundation for the tooth. The unique properties of titanium mean that it will fuse with the bone in a process called osseointegration. The bond is very strong and considered permanent.

The visible crown is usually made of porcelain or another strong tooth-colored material. It is designed in a way that will naturally blend in with any other existing natural teeth.

These two components are joined together using an abutment.
